Job role- Bartender
As a bartender, I have developed verbal and non-verbal communication skills, organisational skills, and quality interpersonal skills. For this role I was:
o Polite and friendly with customers
o Took charge of maintaining a clean and tidy workplace
o Entrusted as a key holder and to set up and down the premises independently
o Be aware of the environment around me and potentially have to deal with boisterous and hectic conditions while maintaining my standard of work.
o De-escalating confrontations within the clientele, and taking appropriate actions based on the situation presented.
o Training new staff members
The Freebird (part-time whilst studying)- September 2021 to May 2022
Job role- Bartender
I often worked on concert days therefore I had to be alert, aware of my surroundings whilst wearing suitable ear protection. This meant I had to rapidly develop my non-verbal communication skills to accommodate for the reduced hearing of both me and the customers.
My job was to serve customers, restock shelves and keep things clear and clean throughout the night.
Research Placement CHBH (placement year)- October 2020 to July 2021
Job role- Research assistant
During my work placement year, I worked as a research assistant on a live project; ‘The psychology of deadlines and how psychiatric traits affect motivation in our efforts to reach them’.
I was required to mitigate the uncertainties of the pandemic, present in lab meetings, experiment building, report writing, learn how to code in MATLAB and new analysis techniques.
I was able to (and still do) join many research discussions both within the CHBH and other lab groups elsewhere. This exposed me to other forms of research techniques and presentation ideas to further my understanding of the field of research.
National Citizen Service (voluntary)- July 2018 to August 2018
Job role- Assistant team leader
I worked within a team to lead young adults (16 years) through a 3-week course to help build and improve skills for the future including both work and personal life. It was important for me to be both a leader and a role model to these young people, but also be understanding and compassionate.
Oxfam (voluntary)- February 2017 to February 2018
Job role- Volunteer
The year I spent volunteering; I took on numerous roles in the store to widen increasing my leadership, interpersonal and verbal/non-verbal communication skills. In turn, this made me a valuable member of the team due to my flexibility and reliability. For my role I:
o Served and directed customers in person and over the phone
o Was trusted with money and using the tills
o Managed the shop floor
o Cleaned and tidied the shop
o Researched products to ensure fair pricing
AP Motors (part-time whilst studying)- October 2016 to September 2018
Job role- Packing operative
I worked as a packaging operative in which I was required to be organised and work quickly, efficiently, and up to standards even under pressure. I had to know how to prioritise to ensure the right parcels were delivered on time.
Donaldson’s Veterinary Practice (voluntary)- October 2015 to March 2016
Job role- Intern Student
During my 26 weeks of voluntary work, I gained experience working within a clinical environment.
I was regularly involved in many of the activities, including observation of and helping where I could during surgical procedures. The senior staff took the time to explain how and why they were making each diagnosis and show how the laboratory results aided their decision making.
I helped with the sterilisation of medical instruments, floors, surfaces, cages and was trained in the use of the autoclave. Due to the sensitive nature of some of the cases, I had to ensure I was friendly and compassionate for the families involved.
Apple Pie Catering (part-time whilst studying)- September 2014 to June 2015
Job role- Waitress
During high school, I was a waitress at the masonic lodge, Wakefield. I was required to work within a team to serve a set meal plan to our customers. This required communication, interpersonal skills, ability to problem solve allowing the evening to run smoothly.
As my first experience with a paid job, I was able to learn a lot of key transferable skills which has been of much benefit to further jobs and opportunities.
